Featured Studios This Year:

2021 was a fantastic year for studios in Brazil. At Brazil Games Association /Brazil Games we saw the launch and reveal of some amazing titles, from kart drivers and Formula 1 legends to innovative 2D puzzlers and their VR equivalents. With so much to show, it would be hard to single them all out on this list, but here are a few to pique everyone's curiosity!
Imagem
Lunic Games: Selected as part of the “Best by Brazil” selection during Brazil's BIG Festival 2021, Lunic Games' Evertried is a rogue-like tactics title that challenges players to climb a 50-story tower filled with enemies and an impressive variety of skills and modifiers to increase your skills during each race.

Imagem
Rockhead Studios: Creators of the popular Starlit series, Rockhead did what any good studio with a roster of lovable characters would do after several hit titles - put them in a kart game! Starlit Kart Racing is Rockhead's variation on the classic "kart" formula, with special items, weapons and a host of wacky, colorful tracks to enjoy.

Imagem
Cafundó Creative Studios: This year, Cafundó released the mind-bending puzzle Tetragon, which places players in a square world where walls can suddenly change position and alter the direction of gravity. A moving tale of the bond between father and son and brilliant puzzle design is a perfect example of what a small but dedicated studio can accomplish.

Imagem
BitCake Studio: studio located in Rio de Janeiro, BitCake makes titles for PC, browsers, mobile devices, consoles and, most recently, virtual reality with DeMagnete - released in July to positive reviews. A gorgeous VR title, DeMagnete challenges players with a series of physics-based puzzles using the power of magnetic gloves - positive attracts, negative repels - in a mysterious world run by an enigmatic AI.

Imagem
PetitFabrik: one of the brightest and most promising indie studios in Brazil, PetitFabrik wants to bring players back to the golden age of 3D platform games with Kukoos - Lost Pets, a title full of bright and colorful environments, super cute characters and a light touching story, aimed at PC and consoles. Nominated for Best Console Game at the Game Connection X Chinajoy 2021 Global Game Development Awards, Kukoos - Lost Pets is reminiscent of classic Nintendo and Rare titles like Super Mario 3D and Banjo Kazooie. Their team was one of the EPIC MegaGrants recipients this year! An important achievement.

Imagem
Aquiris: Following on the heels... or on the wheels, of the successful Horizon Chase Turbo, Aquiris recently launched an expansion that paid tribute to a Brazilian legend and one of the most revered Formula 1 drivers of all time: Senna Forever. This DLC puts players in Ayrton Senna's car and follows his illustrious career, in addition to bringing new features to the game such as the first-person view!

Imagem
Electric Monkeys: Located in the thriving city of São Paulo, Electric Monkeys is proud of its commitment to developing innovative and original IPs that stand out from the competition. This year, the studio released Gravitational, a virtual reality puzzler that will not only force players to think about gravity in smart new ways, but also what it's like to navigate a world built by people without disabilities from a wheelchair user perspective.

And summarizing our year 2021 we can say with certainty that 2022 will be even bigger. With Brazil now leading South America as the region's biggest gaming market, the country's burgeoning indie scene will continue to grow and shine in the international spotlight. Not only will 2022 see more fabulous games and exciting releases, but Brazil Games is also looking forward to next year for reasons we can all relate to - the return to in-person events. While BIG Festival has experienced fantastic growth and participation with its digital iteration, nothing compares to playing games and meeting face-to-face with studios, publishers and industry icons. With the reduction of restrictions on the pandemic and the opening of borders, the country can't wait to welcome the world to its shores for the BIG Festival 2022, which will make its triumphant return to the Frei Caneca Convention Center, in São Paulo, as a hybrid in-person and digital event from July 5th to 10th, 2022.

Thanks for a great year!

Kriophobia
Imagem
Brazilian Survival Horror game, launches Steam page and teaser.

Kriophobia follows Anna’s story, a young geophysicist who goes to Zhokhov Island to investigate magnetic anomalies. Once there, she must face her deepest fears to survive not only Siberia's freezing temperatures, but also experiences beyond her comprehension.

In 2014, the game from Brazilian company Fira Soft was approved in the Steam Greenlight project, which allowed the player community to vote for games they wished to see available on the Steam platform. That same year, the company launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund the game’s development, which fell short of the fundraising goal.

Thus, the development of Kriophobia ended up being put on hold for further fundraising. Today, the game is financed by the public notice PRODAV 14/2017 by Ancine, FSA and BRDE. Currently, the development has resumed and the company is working on the game's release.

Kriophobia draws inspiration from classics of the Survival Horror genre and in the teaser, it is possible to identify some of these characteristics, while maintaining the innovative aspects that the genre offers.

Check out the game directly on Steam.

PIPA STUDIOS
Imagem
How the process of creating an animation connects with the HR universe. A testimonial from Vanessa Gurgel, HR Director at Pipa Studios.

Recently, the movie "My Little Pony: A New Generation" was released on Netflix. This exciting animated film tells the story of a courageous and idealistic pony who decides to restore peace and bring the magic back to Equestria (the world of earth ponies, Pegasus and unicorns). So, what's the relationship between the My Little Pony and Pipa Studios, you may ask?

Well, Pablo Mayer, the Production Designer responsible for the whole look of the film, gave an exclusive talk to Pipeires and here’s the thing, his story with Pipa actually goes back to 2012, when together with our creative director, Diogo Cesar Correa, he created the visual identity for Praia Bingo.

During the talk, we got to find out a bit more about his life story, career development as an artist and hear some of the inherent challenges faced when producing and animating a film. Pablo offered up lots of helpful tips that apply to professionals from all areas. As an HR professional, I was especially struck by his description of the creative process that achieved the fantastic results we see in the film!

I’ll share, in my own words, the two skills that most caught my attention in this process to achieve extraordinary results: ·

  • Vulnerability: facing the challenge of reworking a classic is no walk in the park. I believe that presenting a sketch with your ideas before they are complete means being open to criticism and having the courage to question divergent opinions.
  • Persistence: I understand illustration as a translation of something that is in the imagination (yours or somebody else’s). Reaching the final result can be demanding, it can take lots of discussion and require openness to discard ideas and recreate them in a new way.

In our exchange with Pablo, as well as learning so much about the world of ponies, I learned a little more about what happens behind the scenes in the world of art and the challenges art professionals face.I came out of the experience marveling at the creative power humans are capable of!

GI 100: Game Changers
Imagem
GamesIndustry.biz is looking to end the year by celebrating more individuals and organizations working to make gaming a better place.

GamesIndustry.biz is looking to celebrate the often unheralded people and organizations working to make the industry a better place.

For the unfamiliar, last year's Game Changers featured 100 individuals and groups working in the industry to help people through their efforts on diversity, accessibility, mental health, healthy community building, and more. They wanted to highlight people from every walk of life and in every corner of the world working to create a more inclusive and fair industry.

They do their best to find candidates that might ordinarily reside in their blind spots, reaching out to influential people throughout the industry for suggestions and nominations on who they think deserves to be celebrated for their work on this front. They did it again this year, trying to open up the pool of candidates a bit wider.

It Started!! Largest competitive game development marathon opens registration for the 5th edition.

GameJamPlus has a total duration of 7 months, with the mission of fostering the creative economy industry with new games and companies, combining the efforts and interests of the different poles of developers in the world

Coming in its 5th edition, GameJamPlus opens the sale of tickets for the biggest Game Jam focused on business in the world. This year, the competition broke the record for reach, reaching more than 30 countries and more than 100 cities, promising a close contest. “We know the potential of the participants and expect many surprises over these 7 months. We're looking forward to seeing all the new games coming out in October!” reveals Ian Rochlin, CEO of GameJamPlus.

In the 2020 edition, 281 games were created, which competed for 16 prize categories. The expectation for this edition is that approximately 500 new projects will pass through the first stage of the event, between October 8th and 12th. This is the moment where each registered city receives local competitors and competitors, starting production of the games.
This year's differential lies in the launch of Indie Hero, a company from the same creators as GameJamPlus, which aims to be the post-competition. "Every year we experience the creation of very promising projects, but which end up being shelved due to a lack of know-how in business planning", explains Rochlin, who adds that the objective of this new venture is to help independent game developers to conquer their places in this so disputed market.

BRAZILIAN GAME WEEK
Imagem
The worldwide video game market comprises 2.8 billion players and amounts to USD 175 billion – more than the combined value of the movie, video streaming, and digital music industries. It is a rapidly growing sector that thrives even in times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and Brazil is following this global potential.

Recent surveys show that 72% of Brazilians play video games on various platforms, a great opportunity for game developers. The size of the Brazilian market is estimated at USD 1.7 billion, an amount that attracts the attention of national and international companies. Although a significant amount, it represents only 1% of the global market, which means that while there are good opportunities for game developers in Brazil, the potential for expansion abroad is immense.
Brazil has achieved much in the global video games scenario and, even so, little is known about its video game market and industry. Abragames and Apex-Brasil have been promoting the Brazil Games project since 2014, with excellent results, but with the rapid growth of the international market, Itamaraty identified an opportunity to, using the capillarity of its Embassies and Consulates, expand the message about Brazilian games, simultaneously, in other countries.
Thus came the idea of the "Brazilian Game Week", an event that will take place between the 20th and 24th of September and will feature the participation of Embassies and Consulates in more than 20 countries. During the week, content referring to games, companies, technology and the current state of the video game industry in Brazil will be presented on social media posts, according to the schedule below:
September 20th - The Brazilian Industry
Brazil has a rich ecosystem in the video game industry, involving dozens of small and medium studios, with access to support and financing structures, specialized university courses, large events such as the BIG Festival and Brasil Game Show, and a national association of game developers (Abragames). On this day, the video game industry will be presented, along with the ever-growing potential of Brazilian games.

September 21 - Featured Brazilian Games
Brazilian games are acclaimed by critics and the general public for their original mechanics, good graphics and fun gameplay, available on mobile, consoles or PC. On this day, the most prominent Brazilian games will be briefly presented.

September 22 - E-sports in Brazil
Brazil is already one of the leading countries in numbers of professional players and audience for e-sports, a trend that only increased due to the social isolation provoked by the pandemic. On this day, the context of e-sport in Brazil and its meaning for the video-game industry will be presented.

September 23 - "Serious Games": Education, Health and other sectors
Gaming is also serious business! On this day, possible uses of video games to support various activities in all sectors of the economy will be presented. Support for education, corporate training, practice in the health area... the possibilities are countless.

September 24th - Virtual Reality
The Brazilian video game industry also works with cutting edge technologies! This day will showcase the latest efforts in the virtual reality industry, award-winning games, and the potential for growth and innovation using this technology.

In addition to the communication effort for the international gamer community, contacts will be made with local companies in the video game sector and other interested parties, such as academia and the press. Acting on several simultaneous fronts, more accurate data on the various local markets should be made available, and potential investors in Brazilian companies identified.

Game on!

We foresee a great conversation on the matter! And this is because the panel also includes:

Brian Burleson, Managing Director of Production @Gearbox Software
Walter de Torres, Founding Partner @Pixel Mafia
Colby Acree, Outsourcing Department Head @WB Games, Avalanche

Panel: Getting Noticed as a Small Vendor
It can be difficult to stand out among all the large vendors in our industry. How do you get noticed? What do development studios want to see? How do you prepare for shows like XDS?
Join us as we discuss the best practices and strategies to use when approaching a large development studio for work or when entering the industry as a new vendor. Hear from both, the vendor and developer side as we discuss our thoughts and experiences. Our goal is to share knowledge and to help young vendors grow in order to keep this industry as healthy as possible.

Help Us Help You: Best Practices From RFP To Sign Off
While it may be said that the client is king, true leadership involves setting teams up for success by enabling them to perform without having to face needless obstacles. Developers may inadvertently hinder their external partners through inefficient communication and processes, while making infeasible demands and setting unrealistic standards. This can result in partners delivering less than their true potential in delivery time, cost and quality.

A publisher has invited several panellists to the stage, representing companies providing a variety of services, each with a unique cultural background, focus, scope and perspective. She will ask them to share best practices that she, and other publishers & developers, can engage in to improve the seller-buyer relationship from RFP to sign off, to support their partners in delivering their best work effectively, efficiently, healthily and sustainably.
Date: Friday, Sept 17th @10.30AM (PST)

With him on stage you will find Juney Dijkstra, Legacy Portfolio Manager @Paradox Interactive, Blandine Prost, Client Partner @Keywords Studios and Andrii Titov, CTO @Stepico Games

All the sessions will have Q&A, it is your chance to peek at the brains of these stars.

YUKI: Is ready for you to enjoy it!!

Imagem
The Bullet Hell Roguelike in VR Launched on July 22 on Oculus Store and Steam!

ARVORE, the Emmy Award winning VR studio behind the acclaimed Pixel Ripped series, is proud to announce that their upcoming Bullet Hell Roguelike in VR YUKI (trailer, press kit, Oculus, Steam, website) launched - July 22nd on Oculus Quest, Quest 2, Rift and all Steam VR platforms at a price of 19,99 USD|EUR, with a PSVR release coming later this year.
YUKI is an upbeat mix of the bullet-hell and roguelike genres in VR set in a multidimensional anime universe.  Enter a kid’s wild imagination and fly by controlling Yuki’s action-figure using your hands. Move your body to dodge bullets and obstacles, while fighting evil forces that want to control the universe, in this challenging game where each defeat is just another step to get closer to victory. You can watch it HERE!

"With YUKI, we wanted to make each run feel like a completely new game. Every session feels like an opportunity to invest in a strategy that you haven't tried yet, and to tackle a uniquely-generated combination of bullet patterns and obstacles. When it comes to level design, our ultimate goal was to embrace three-dimensional gameplay in a way that would be impossible in "pancake" (non-VR) games. We wanted to create challenges that use 3D space as much as possible, making players perform precise and fluid movements in all axes, as if they were dancing with the enemy bullets. When we hear players saying 'I couldn't imagine a game that uses spatial awareness like this if VR didn't exist', we know we did a good job."
- Pedro Câmara (Lead Game Designer & Associate Director)

Imagem
Publisher Dangen Entertainment and developer Lunic Games have announced isometric tactical rogue-lite game Evertried for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (Steam). It will launch this fall.

Evertried is a tactical rogue-lite set in the afterlife where the player takes the role of a fallen warrior who must ascend a mysterious tower by defeating enemies in turn-based combat. Each floor presents a unique challenge to overcome through wits, strategy and positioning. The player must make clever use of attacks, movement, skills and hazards to clear floors of enemies and ascend higher in The Tower toward their destiny.

Key Features of Evertried:
  • I Get Knocked Down…: 50 floors of fun await you as you battle your way to the top of the Tower, but death is only the beginning! In classic rogue-like fashion, your skills — as a player and in the game — will only grow sharper and more powerful upon each death.
  • Pace Yourself: In Evertried, your actions dictate when enemies are able to move and attack — free-flowing turn-based action combat system allows you to carefully plan each series of actions several moves ahead. Take your time, employ tactics, then leap into action!
  • Skills Pay the Bills: Increase your powers with each floor by acquiring Modifiers, which make you stronger during that particular run. Skills, on the other hand, remain as permanent upgrades, allowing you to become mightier and more capable on the next attempt
  • Let’s Go Shopping: Collect shards to be used as currency in conveniently located shops every ten floors, where you can buy all sorts of nifty items, skills, and modifiers.
  • Stay Focused: Attacking and defeating enemies will increase your Focus level, which determines the amount of shards you receive when fighting enemies. Keep pressing the attack and Focus goes up; if you begin to stall or hesitate, however, your Focus will start to drop.

About Lunic Games
Lunic Games was founded in 2019 by longtime friends Pedro Colmenero and Eduardo Fernandes and is currently situated in the city of Santos, southeast Brazil. The studio was created upon the foundation of “minimum complexity; maximum polish” with the intention to foster a culture of sustainable growth within the Brazilian game development market. Colmenero initially set out to be a doctor, attending medical college until deciding he’d rather focus on more creative endeavors, like creating fun, immersive gaming experiences.

The company’s first title was the self-published Tower Smash, a mobile title with a nearly 5-star rating on the Google play store. Not one to rest on their laurels, Lunic Games quickly began work on their next title, the old-school 2D platformer Lumi and the Dark Nebula. The company’s big breakout moment came when they launched the Kickstarter for Evertried, a game developed in partnership with Danilo Domingues. Evertried not only met its goal in under 34 hours, but achieved a staggering 400% of its funding goal by the end of the 30-day period. Suffice to say, people are pretty excited about the title, and there are a few great reasons for that. A small studio with a big heart, Lunic Games is a developer to keep an eye on.

Evertried will release on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S/X, and PlayStation 5 in Fall 2021. Stay up to date by following the game on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and joining the official Discord.

Welcome to the Brazil Games Newsletter!

This semester has been amazing (and quite busy) for Brazilian game companies. Brazil Games associates have attended three great events around the world to share their experiences, meet people and do business.

The Brazil Games Export Program promotes the Brazilian games industry globally, developing new business leads and branding Brazil as the go-to place for business. It was created in 2013, by the Brazilian Game Companies Association, Abragames, in partnership with Apex-Brasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency.

Brazil Games has attended Gamescom, in Germany, from August 20th to 24th, External Development Summit, in Canada, from September 4th to 6th, and for the first time Tokyo Game Show, in Japan, from September 12th to 15th. We also had great Brazilian talents being highlighted in each of them and you will find this information below.

Apart from that, we are also getting ready for Game Connection Europe, in France, this month. It will take place from October 29th to 31st, which will close our year's events schedule. Tetragon, by Cafundo Creative Studio, is the only Brazilian game nominated for the Game Connection Development Awards Europe 2019. The game is running for The Best Mobile and Best Quality of Art awards.

Brazil game industry will also be a theme in the panel Brazil: The Next Super Territory for Games, which will present a brief overview of the Brazilian game landscape and ecosystem and why game companies should be mapping this new territory.

We are also bringing up some games which highlighted Brazilian cultural heritage in their narrative. These games are also raising gender and racial discussions and showing women and mixed-race protagonists in their gameplay. It is really worth knowing them!

Game production highlights Brazilian culture

Brazilian game production scene has been breaking paradigms: gender, racial diversity and many other statements from the industry so far. The recent production (and also worldwide consumption) is bringing up discussions about their protagonists and storytelling.

One of the examples is “Arida: Backland’s Awakening”, by the studio Aoca Game Lab. After the studio attended Gamescom, Arida downloads by German users dramatically increased.

According to Filipe Pereira, when speaking with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, founder of Aoca Games studio, Brazilians are less than half of "Arida" players. So far, they represent 47%. Americans are second, about 30%, “perhaps because of the strong gaming culture,” says Pereira. Then, it is followed by Germany, France, and Canada.

Arida tells the story of Cicera, a young woman who tries to survive in the Bahia state backlands in the late 19th century. The game combines state of the art graphics and a provocative gameplay which brings the player even more deeper inside the narrative.

"The King of Backwoods", by Ignite Game Studio

Another example, "The King of Backwoods", by Ignite Game Studio, is a VR Game inspired by Lampião, the king of gunslingers of the backwoods in Brazil. After being killed in an ambush, the most famous gunslinger of the Brazilian backwoods discovers that before his judgment, he must return to earth and hunt down demons and free renegade spirits. It will be launched in the last quarter of 2020 and will be available at Steam and Oculus Store.

“Dandara”, by Long Hat House

Other Brazilian game recently launched which brings a non-white female protagonist is “Dandara”, by Long Hat House. It is already considered a stunning game which was voted by Time magazine as one of the best in 2018, along with "Super Mario Party", "God of War" and "Red Dead Redemption 2". The game is inspired by Dandara dos Palmares, a heroin and (also) wife of Zumbi dos Palmares, one of the great Brazilian heroes who fighted against the slavery.

"Araní",  by Diorama Digital

Finally, one more example worth mentioning is "Araní", by Diorama Digital, which is still in testing phase, and stars an indigenous female warrior. The game is based on successful traditional franchises such as "Devil May Cry" and "God of War."

GAMES MADE IN BRAZIL ABOUT BRAZILIAN CULTURE

  • "Arida": Backland’s Awakening’ - Created by a historian, set in 19th century in Bahia
  • "Araní" - Still in development, its protagonist is an indigenous female warrior and the soundtrack is on Tupi language
  • "Dandara" - Standed out by Time magazine as one of the best games of 2018, it is inspired by Dandara dos Palmares, a Brazilian heroin who fighted for the liberation of the slaves
  • "The King of Backwoods", by Ignite Game Studio, is a VR Game inspired at Lampião, the king of the gunslingers of the backwoods. The game will be launched on the last quarter of 2020 for Steam and Oculus Store.
