Brazil
is the official partner country of gamescom 2023, the world's largest event for video games and Europe's leading business platform for the games industry. The organizers of gamescom, Koelnmesse, game - the German games industry association, Abragames, the Brazilian Games Association, in its partnership with ApexBrasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, is happy to lead the Brazilian delegation and in to have Brazil as a partner country of gamescom this year.

Brazil will assume this role of official partner country with the purpose to highlight Brazil among international investors and partners. The Brazilian games market, considered the most important in Latin America, has been attracting foreign companies eyeing the potential of local studios and the quality of the products they develop.

The Brazilian games market itself had an important growth in recent years. The estimated revenue from digital games in Brazil in 2021 was over US$ 2.3 billion, and almost 75% of the population is estimated to play games frequently. There are more than 1,000 game development studios in Brazil, which represents an increase of 169% over the past four years - in 2018, the country had 375 such companies.

"It is a historic moment for Brazil. In recent years, we have seen incredible results from the national games industry and gamescom's tribute crowns all the work that has been done by Brazilian studios and professionals. It is an honor for Abragames to lead this project and experience up close an unprecedented recognition", says Rodrigo Terra, President of Abragames.

"We, from ApexBrasil, are partners of Abragames and believe in the Brazilian games industry, which is experiencing an important moment, there are 1009 development studios in our country. With the government of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, we can strengthen this sector by establishing continued public support policies and seeking to regulate and facilitate the development of the games industry in Brazil. We have many talents and need to create a proper ecosystem to take advantage of that, after all, we are talking about a giant industry, with more than 3 billion players worldwide and with a huge potential", said Jorge Viana, president of ApexBrasil.

Felix Falk, Managing Director of the game association: “We are very pleased to have Brazil as the partner country of gamescom 2023, making it the first ever partner country from South America. This shows once again that gamescom is the home of the international games industry connecting countries and continents through gaming. The Brazilian games industry has grown strongly and is very well networked internationally. Brazil and South America contribute to a vibrant and colorful games world which we will celebrate together at gamescom in August.”

Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer at Koelnmesse: "gamescom is the leading international event for the whole gaming community. Partnering with different countries for each gamescom and showcasing their vibrant gaming scene has always been and remains a vital part of our ambition to bring together this global, immensely dynamic industry. Games industry

Abragames expect sustainable growth of the Brazilian games sector in 2023
Fotografia
Brazilian industry must grow even more in the next twelve months.

In 2023, with the new federal government taking office, the guidelines that were already being worked on in previous years will be able to come into effect at any time. An example of this is the Legal Framework for Games, which is being approved by the Senate and which after approval must enter into force and change the way electronic game development is seen in Brazil.

For Carolina Caravana, vice-president of Abragames, the approval of the  Legal Framework for Games is an important step towards the regulation of the national industry. “Abragames defends improvements in the text so that it represents even more what the game development market understands as essential, such as reducing the bureaucracy for the importation of materials, greater regional and federal assistance to studios, and incentives that help in the delivery of games of all genres. With the reduction of expenses and, consequently, with the reduction of costs to develop games, we believe that games can be more accessible to all audiences”, explained Carolina.

Rodrigo Terra, president of Abragames, emphasizes that it is important to keep the global scenario in mind. With the war in Ukraine, the restriction of game consumption in China – one of the largest consumer markets in the world –, the search for acquisitions by market giants and the post-pandemic difficulties in the production of essential technologies for game development, the trend is that the value of games really undergoes a global readjustment.

“The world has gone through an atypical situation in recent years and the market is trying to adjust to all these changes. In the gamer universe it is no different. The industry giants end up getting around the situation in an easier way, as they are already economically consolidated and have an established loyal audience. Therefore, it is important that measures such as the Legal Framework for Games be approved so that both the end consumer and the national studios are not too much impacted by these changes.”

Abragames believes that 2023 will be another very promising year for the growth of the national studios. The number of game development studios increases every day and, with that, the number of games released, as well as their reach, grows. The Brazilian games industry already develops games for several platforms, from console and mobile titles to cloud gaming and virtual reality. The last few years were the best in the country's history to the sector. There was a significant increase in the number of releases and new studios.

The first season premiered in January.

From video games to television! This month, the Box Kids TV channel starts showing Starlit Toons, an animation based on the video game Starlit Adventures. In small doses of fun, the animated series – can also be found in comics and video games or mobile – Starlit Toons presents everyday situations in which the characters Bo, Kikki and their gang entertain, teach and collaborate in developing children's curiosity and the whole family.

The attraction, created and developed by the Brazilian Rockhead Studios, explores the possibilities of a fantastic universe full of epic adventures and many challenges. The first ten episodes seek to start an unprecedented adventure in the world of Starlit, presenting the universe from a new perspective in order to complement what already exists in Starlit games for PlayStation, XBOX and Nintendo Switch video games, as well as comic books.

The ten episodes of the first season of the animation will be shown from this Sunday, January 8th, in small doses of fun throughout the day on the Box Kids channel. Starlit Toons can also be watched on the Box Brazil Play streaming platform.

In addition to Starlit Toons being great content for the channel's children's audience, the rapprochement between the companies also occurred because both Rockhead and the Box Brazil Group, of which Box Kids is a part, are neighbors in the Tecnopuc complex in Porto Alegre/ RS. The site is an ecosystem that houses public and private companies, from the most different fields of activity, in a community format aimed at bringing them together, exchanging ideas, experiences, products and services.

Spacelines From The Far Out, new video game simulates commercial space travel
Picture

Games could predict the future of commercial space travel.

"Spacelines From The Far Out" is a 2022 video game developed by Coffeenauts, which allows the player to take control of a commercial space liner company, responsible for transporting customers along established space paths.

While the game itself is irreverent and wraps itself in a kitschy 1950s 'space race' aesthetic, its subject matter couldn't be more relevant to modern discussions of the lightning pace at which the commercial space travel industry is growing. With commercial entities like Virgin Galactic, SpaceX and Blue Origin set to join new players in the coming years, experts in the field are predicting that affordable suborbital travel will be available to most of us within a few decades.

"Spacelines From The Far Out" launches on Xbox Game Pass, which means you can have fun navigating the stresses and obstacles of commercial space travel, without the required billions of dollars in upfront costs. See the game Here.

The creators of Chroma Squad are back on Kickstarter with a new RPG
Picture
Picture
Behold Studios presented a new crowdfunding project.

The internationally acclaimed studio for games Chroma Squad and Knights of Pen & Paper has returned to Kickstarter. Behold Studios has unveiled a new crowdfunding project and hopes to have at least the same success as it had in 2013 with an RPG about Power Rangers and the TV shows called Chroma Squad.

“Returning to Kickstarter once again is not for the faint of heart. Chroma Squad in 2013 was a big effort, but it was very successful.” said Saulo Camarotti, one of the studio's founders. “Today we are returning to crowdfunding, but we want to bring more experience and maturity to the project”, he adds.

The new project is called Mahou Senshi Cosplay Club, where the studio is focusing on creating a narrative-driven RPG with its well-known flair of mixing realities of imagination and meta-reference. At this time, a Magical Girl gets her power by starting a journey to become a Cosplayer, and the game will let you create cosplays and fight in turn-based battles using the costumes you create.

The game is a complete RPG set in a cosplay world. You will have the opportunity to explore events and exhibitions to participate in cosplay contests. Through exploration, you will expand your inventory with new materials and design pieces so you can be more creative in developing new cosplays.

The studio is looking for support to complete the game on Kickstarter and has put some interesting options on its list, such as buying access to an early playable version of the game, or even becoming an in-game NPC cosplayer that looks just like you and would be wearing a cosplay of your choice.

Mahou Senshi Cosplay Club will launch first for PC and main consoles, and is expected to launch in 2023 following the success of Kickstarter. If you want to check out the crowdfunding page, go HERE.

Brazilian company launches PC game with a focus on collaboration

Magna Interactive launched on the gaming platform Steam.

The game Ukko & Guará: Stellarbound, is the launch of Magna Interactive. Focusing on collaboration between characters who live in opposite worlds, the game features a guará wolf from Brazil and a reindeer from Finland who must solve a series of puzzles.

Set in Brazil and also in Finland, the characters are connected through the power of a shooting star that fell to earth and split in half. One half of the star will end up in Brazil and the other in Finland, where, respectively, Guará and Ukko find them. Through the differences of both northern and southern hemispheres, the game presents challenges based on each character's biome, as well as solutions provided by the climatic differences of each one.

Among the proposed challenges, the player will find buttons, cross rivers, build bridges, push objects, among others. It is worth noting the absence of violence throughout the game. Originally created by a team of 5 people for the Good Game Brazil Game Jam, organized by the Brazilian embassy in Helsinki, the game was a winner of the event that provided the team with a trip on a diplomatic mission to Helsinki.

“The final quality of the game delivered at the game jam and the victory of the same, gave indications that the game was worth continuing. That's why we brought it into Magna and continued to develop more levels and new mechanics to launch it commercially on the Steam platform”, comments Fernando Sá de Souza, founder of Magna Interactive.

Black Anvil, TCG by Animus Game Studio, is announced for PC and Mobile
Picture
The launch of the game, which has different mechanics, is scheduled for 2023.

The Brazilian studio Animus announced that it is developing a trading card game that promises differentiated gameplay. Black Anvil is a Medieval-era card game and, to start the game, players must summon a Daemon and equip it with holy items to then begin the battle.

Battle gameplay, however, is entirely influenced by the phases of the moon, which change each round and affect the attributes of Daemons and cards. “Black Anvil will allow players to use scrolls to create their cards and then use them in their own decks, or exchange them in an in-game marketplace,” explains Matheus Mazuqueli, creative director at Animus Game Studio. “In Black Anvil we will empower the player to create their deck the way they prefer, whether using our crafting system or buying cards directly from the store”, he concludes.

In 2023, the Alpha version of the game will be available and Black Anvil will introduce the features of dice rolls and the lunar system. Afterwards, the game will continue to be updated, receiving crafters, which will inaugurate the card creation system. The cards can be developed through the scrolls and resources that will be obtained on the board after each game.
With integration to blockchain technology, Black Anvil will have two game modes: single-player and PvP, free for everyone and no need to connect to a cryptocurrency wallet. To play in ranked mode, a connection to a cryptocurrency wallet is required. The objects and armor created can be traded in the Black Anvil marketplace, which uses Web3 technology. Each card has its value coined as an NFT and, in the future, it will be able to integrate other games that also use blockchain.

Goldilock One - Open World Action RPG BR
Picture
Game attracted many people every day at BGS.

“Goldilock One: As Brumas de Jakaíra”, a game in the Pre-Alpha phase, called the attention at the largest games fair in Latin America. Independent studio Shedofideas Games made a save against a BOSS available to use as a challenge, and the result was long lines of people waiting to participate in the challenge and get to know the game.
For Will Emmerich, project director: "We had good expectations for the event, but honestly we didn't expect that the response from the class would be so positive, we went to BIG and managed to use all the feedback we received in a positive way, and now going to BGS and seeing the reaction of the crowd playing, receiving the affection and praise of the public was something unique... We had several who didn't defeat BOSS in one day and came the next day to the booth eager to play again. I don't even know how to explain how we felt .”
The challenge against BOSS was so successful that the studio is already preparing an exclusive PLAYTEST for Brazilians. The project aims to reproduce the experience obtained in the events through a ranking system with different difficulties. The strategy is to promote community engagement with the project, on the steam page.

Soon everyone will be able to sign up and wait for the release of access that will be in diferent groups. The bold scope project, is preparing a crowdfunding for the beginning of December, which accompanying its extended goals can reach 22 hours of gameplay in an open world, where thel NPCs can be add to join the main character's Party. The experiences can be used both for real-time combat and for solving puzzles in the environment using the specific skills of each one.

Abragames takes survey to the international market
Imagem
Imagem
The idea is to show the Brazilian gaming industry potential.

Gamescom, which takes place from August 24 to 26, 2022, in Cologne, Germany, will be the first international event where the National Survey of the Games Industry will be presented. The study is a result of a partnership between Abragames, Brazilian Association of Game Developers, and ApexBrasil, Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, which presented unprecedented data from the national market and a complete mapping of the local developers.
One of the most impressive pieces of information from the survey was the increase in the number of game development studios in the country: from 375 in 2018 to 1,009 in 2022 - a jump of 169% in the last four years. Game developers tend to produce games for more than one area, diversifying the source of revenue. Among the largest revenues are: entertainment games (76%), educational games (12%), advergames (6%), corporate training (4%) and simulators using specific hardware (1%). Mobile devices (38%) are the main technological platform used, followed by PCs (20%), consoles (17%), web (13%), virtual reality/augmented reality (9%) and social media (0.4 %). The main consumer markets for Brazilian productions are the United States and Latin America, which did business with 55% and 53% of Brazilian studios, respectively. After that are Western Europe (49%), Canada (49%), Portuguese-speaking countries (41%), Japan (37%) and China (24%).

Eliana Russi, from the Brazil Games Export Project, who will be with the Brazilian delegation during Gamescom, highlighted that the research was very important to have a general profile of the market, which is one of the fastest growing in the country and has 12,441 people working with game development. According to the survey from Abragames and ApexBrasil, around 29.8% of this total are women. In previous surveys from 2018 and 2014, this same share represented only 20% and 15%, respectively. In addition, 57% of Brazilian companies claim to have a diverse team, with transsexuals, elderly people, foreigners, refugees, people with disabilities, black, brown or indigenous people.

BIG Festival was a success! The new format, now hybrid, and the new space, São Paulo Expo, were approved by all. BIG celebrated 10 years in 2022.

BIG Festival is the biggest gaming event in Latin America and one of the most commented in the region! The success of the 2022 edition, held from July 7 to 10, 2022, at São Paulo Expo, in São Paulo, showed the potential of the BIG, which is growing every year. With spectacular panels, an excited audience, games, fun, business rounds (only available on the first two days) and lots of information, the event had a very positive impact on all who were able to participate. There were six thousand meetings scheduled (of which 4644 were attended by Brazilian companies), around 1,400 professionals, 669 companies (429 Brazilian) and much more. The numbers are surprising: throughout the four days, almost 30 thousand people visited São Paulo Expo and the festival reached 1.2 million online interactions. This was the biggest edition ever held; the event is expected to have generated more than US$60 million in new business.

Abragames presented unprecedented research at the BIG Festival

Study makes a detailed analysis of the Brazilian game industry.

During BIG Festival, the first National Survey of the Games Industry was presented by Carolina Caravana Laubisch and Rodrigo Terra, vice president and president of Abragames, respectively, Eros Ramos Tomaz da Silva, from ApexBrasil, and Eliana Russi, from the Export Project Brazil Games. With unprecedented data from the national industry and a complete design of the scenario of local developers, the survey was very well received by the industry, the media and the public. The study shows that the Brazilian game development industry is expanding. Despite the current economic scenario, the Brazilian games sector is emerging as a hub in Latin America, stimulating new business and increasing its revenues. There are 1,009 game development studios in the country, a jump of 169% in the last four years, when the country was home to 375 companies from the sector.

According to Rodrigo Terra, president of Abragames, the sector's growth is related to the maturing of the industry in the country, with the popularization of the game developer profession and the spreading of gamer culture contributing to the expansion. Game developers used to produce games for more than one area, diversifying the source of revenue. Among the largest revenues, the following stand out: entertainment games (76%), educational games (12%), advergames (6%), corporate (4%) and simulators using specific hardware (1%). Mobile devices (38%) are the main technological platform used, followed by PCs (20%), consoles (17%), web (13%), virtual reality/extended reality (9%) and social networks (0.4 ) %).

According to the survey, last year 57% of developers sold their services and games to companies in other countries. The main consumer markets for Brazilian productions are the United States and Latin America, which did business with 55% and 53% of Brazilian studios, respectively. Following are Western Europe (49%), Canada (49%), Portuguese-speaking countries (41%), Japan (37%) and China (24%). In the national market, the Southeast still hosts more than half of the developers (57%), followed by the South (21%), Northeast (14%), Midwest (6%) and North (3%). The survey also shows that of the 12,441 people working in the sector, 29.8% are women. In the 2018 and 2014 surveys, they made up just 20% and 15% of the workforce, respectively.

The survey is the result of a partnership between Abragames, the Brazilian Association of Game Developers, and ApexBrasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency.

The survey has incredible data. See more HERE.
