EDITORIAL
March was an important month in our industry, marked by two significant events: GDC, where the Brazil Games project, a collaboration between Abragames and ApexBrasil (Brazilian Agency for Promotion of Exports and Investments), showcased nearly 50 companies, and the joint luncheon of Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and Emmanuel Macron of France, in which Abragames participated. Moreover, notable events like the Women and International Business gathering by ApexBrasil and the C20 took place. But, the remarkable moment was the Federal Senate's approval of the Legal Framework for Games. Currently, attention is to gamescom latam, with preparations in progress, and the second stage of validation for the Legal Framework, awaiting approval from the Chambre. April has just arrived, but it already promises many new things.
GOVERNMENT
Legal Framework for the Videogames Industry is approved in the Senate and Chamber
Abragames celebrates victory and awaits presidential sanction.
The approval of the Legal Framework for the Videogames Industry in the Federal Senate and in the Chamber of Deputies was a historic achievement for our industry. Abragames celebrates this success and thanks all those who supported this fight: representatives from various sectors of the industry, regional associations, various entities, and the lawmakers, especially Senator Leila Barros, @leiladovolei, Senators Rodrigo Pacheco, @rodrigopacheco, Flávio Arns, @flavioarns, Eduardo Girão, @eduardogiraooficial, and the deputy Kim Kataguiri, @kimkataguiri.
The commitment of Abragames, with the support of the industry and its partners, was essential for this victory, which will represent important changes for the development of the Brazilian games industry. The current text of the Bill which now goes to presidential sanction, is a result of the efforts of the Association, sectors of the Academia, and representative entities of the video game and child and adolescent protection sectors to equip the decisions of the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The initiative is essential to identify the current moment of the segment, understand its main needs, and knowledge the real dimension of the Brazilian industry.
"This is a huge victory for the Brazilian games sector. Over the past two years, together with regional associations and hundreds of studios, we have engaged in a long debate for improvements in the Bill aimed at regulating an industry so important for Brazil's future. Today we can say that the effort was worth it and that we are closer to achieving this great goal," emphasizes Rodrigo Terra, president of Abragames.
The Legal Framework for the Videogames Industry in its current form is a result from over 15 years of demands from the gamedev sector, organizations, institutes, and entities, regional gamedev entities, national Abragames, and the entire network that spoke out and fought to help the sector to be heard. The document also had contributions from the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Economic and Industrial Development. "The text was built and achieved for the Sector. Many hands were involved, and Abragames was also there to defend the interests of this sector that is a champion of innovation in the Creative Economy," Rodrigo Terra added.
