Brazil Games Becomes Stronger Than Ever in the Face of the Pandemic

11/3/2020

0 Comentários

2020 has not been an easy year, to put it lightly, but the people of Brazil are resilient — especially in the game development industry. They’re finishing 2020 on a high note and looking at 2021 with hungry eyes. The Brazilian gaming industry made some big moves this year, showcasing strength and perseverance in the face of a global pandemic. Brazil Games, Abragames, and their associated studios expanded their reach with gaming festivals — hosting and attending — conferences, panels, big game announcements, and the continued development of a flourishing Indie scene
Imagem
BIG Digital and BIG Festival:

BIG Festival saw a shift to the virtual realm this year with BIG Digital, an online event that drew a record-setting 22,000 people who tuned in to and experienced 25 seminars on game development from a whopping 72 industry icons such as Epic Games, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, (Xbox), Nintendo, Snapchat, and Ubisoft. The event was a massive success that drew more than 2 million views and generated an estimated $63 million USD in games-related business from the more than 4,000 meetings brought about between 630 game industry professionals from 34 countries.

BIG Festival will return again next year in an all-new hybrid form, combining their traditional physical conference with a fully-fleshed online counterpart. The eighth edition of BIG Festival will take place in São Paulo from May 5 to May 9, 2021, and studios interested in presenting at the event, whether that be a talk or simply showing off some new titles, can register here.

Events:

In a business sector that traditionally relies heavily on large, in-person events to generate meetings, business deals and partnerships, and focused publicity from attending journalists and media, the complete shut-down of travel and implementation of quarantine and social distancing policies due to the COVID-19 pandemic brought the industry to a screeching halt.

Despite this, Brazil Games studios maintained a strong presence in the resulting digital events that arose from the pandemic:
  • In February, 29 Brazil gaming and entertainment companies — led by Brazilian Content — attended KidScreen 2020, an important children’s entertainment industry business networking event.

  • Brazilian studios Behold Studios, Rogue Snail, Double Dash Studios, and Ludact, were selected for the Indie Megabooth at PAX East this year. This was the second time a Brazil Games delegation attended the event.

  • While Game Connection America 2020 — Digital Edition and GDC 2020 were unfortunately canceled this year, Brazil Games’ studios were still prepared to showcase their fantastic work including 12 that participated in GDC@Play.

  • Devcom was another conference that made the move to digital this year, and Brazil Games brought 32 studios to Devcom Digital 2020, presented a panel talk, and participated in the inaugural NRW GREEN Virtual Indie Expo 2020

  • Brazil Games’ Eliana Russi recently presented at the Pocket Gamer Connects digital event in Helsinki, where she spoke about the growth of the Brazilian gaming industry and provided some tips and advice on how to successfully launch a title in Brazil

  • Brazil Games’ wrapped up the year with a strong presence at the External Development Summit 2020 (XDS20 Adapt) and a first-time appearance at White Nights Fall Online Event, which included a panel talk titled “Doing Game Business in Brazil, Opportunities You Can’t Miss!”

Studios Featured this year:

Brazil Games’ vast and ever-expanding stable of independent gaming studios produced some fantastic titles this year, taking the medium to new places and re-defining the idea of what interactive, audio-visual entertainment can accomplish. Studios like FinalBoss are mastering tools such as UnrealEngine to create stunning adventure games like The Path of Calydra, while development houses like VR Monkey and Medroom are taking virtual education to the next level with immersive experiences that take history students back in time or medical students deep into a virtual human body. Brazil Games’ studios are also working global brand giants like Google, Facebook, Disney, McDonalds, Nike, Honda, and Nestle, as well as legendary gaming studios including Ubisoft, Guerrilla Games, Epic, and many more.

Here is a small glimpse into the tremendous accomplishments 2020 brought the Brazilian Games collective:
  • Webcore Games released the adorable and educational Timo the Game, which won Spcine contest K.O. HQ 2017.
  • PushStart announced their latest game, WOW ANIMALS - Hide N’ Seek, which takes players on a colorful adventure while teaching them about plant and animal biology. The title is part of a multi-media crossover that also includes the WOW Animals animation series.
  • Hermit Crab Game Studio merged real-world sports with the virtual while working with professional football clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal FC. PSG Football Freestyle won Best Game 'Big Brands' BIG Festival 2018 and was a finalist for Indie Prize London 2019.
  • Rockhead Games released their family-friendly vertical side-scroller Startlit Adventures on the Xbox One and a unique edition, Starlit Adventures: Golden Stars, on the Nintendo Switch.
  • Rogue Snail announced their hit F2P top-down shooter, Relic Hunters Zero, will be getting a follow-up in Relic Hunters Legend, coming to Steam Early Access.
  • ARVORE combined modern technology with retro-nostalgia in Pixel Ripped 1995 — the sequel to their award winning Pixel Ripped 1989 — which garnered rave reviews on PC for Vive and Oculus as well as PSVR.
  • Rock Games brought their unique “seasonal” card-battler Manarocks out of early Access and enjoyed a successful Steam launch earlier this year
  • Double Dash released their co-op “brick breakin’ meets SHMUP” mashup Sky Racket on PC and the Nintendo Switch.
  • Kokku, the Brazilian studio credited with work on the massively successful Horizon: Zero Dawn, continued to expand their reach into new markets and remains the only Brazilian co-development studio that works on AAA titles.
In partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), Brazil Games (the Brazilian Games Export Program) is carried out by the Brazilian Games Companies Association and Abragames. Brazil is now the 13th largest video game market in the world and second in Latin America, only to Mexico. The $1.6 billion (USD) Brazilian games industry has nearly doubled in size since 2014, and the number of local gamers reached 75.7 million as of 2018, making Brazil the fourth-largest consumer market in the world.

Despite setbacks, a global pandemic, and moratorium on large, in-person events, Brazil Games managed to not only survive, but thrive. Record-setting attendance for BIG Festival, multiple award-winning studios releasing games, breaking into new markets like Russia, and the continued growth of a rapidly-expanding Indie scene are just a few of the accomplishments achieved in the face of adversity. As Brazil continues to climb the ranks of the international development scene, the sky's the limit and the rest of the world is beginning to take notice. Here’s to a wildly successful 2020 and — hopefully — bigger, bolder things in store for 2021.

Webcore Games came about due to a friendship between Fernando Chamis and Winston Petty way back in 1999. Eventually joined by Camila Malaman, the company took an interest in the Brazilian Game Development scene in 2004 and set out to develop their own original IPs. Among other titles, the studio launched Freekscape: Escape from Hell (as Kidguru Studios, in 2010), which was the first fully Brazilian-developed game to be internationally released on consoles worldwide;  and Turma do Chico Bento, a  Facebook game with more than 3 million players in Brazil (as Insolita Studios, in 2013). The team has since gone on to win dozens of awards for their work, including eight Cannes Lions, two EGW Trophies for Best Brazilian Game, and the Kidscreen 2018 Award nominee.

Webcore Games has worked with a diverse range of clients, creating augmented reality interactions for Chevrolet and an interactive vendor machine called “Chocobot” for Nestlé, which allowed users to create their own virtual chocolate box that would then be assembled into the real thing. Webcore also created award-winning projects for brands like Anheuser-Busch InBev, C&A, Fiat, Globo TV, Honda, Johnson & Johnson, Netflix, Nike, Pedigree, Samsung, Unilever among others.

In 2016 the studio launched the game My Night Job for PS4 and Steam and in 2018 the PS4 version of Starlit Adventures in a partnership with Rockhead Studios. The studio is now working on two new games: Super Timo for Consoles and PC and TerraCodex: The Stolen Relics, a VR game to be released in early 2021.

In Timo The Game, players take on the role of the titular Timo, who finds himself lost in a fantastical literary universe. In order to get home, he must reunite the pieces of a shattered medallion spread across five unique book-worlds. With beautiful, adorable visuals and a touching story of discovery, Timo is a passion project from Raul Aguiar who wrote and designed the comic book that won the Spcine contest K.O. HQ 2017.

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL (August 17, 2020) — Today, Brazil Games is thrilled to announce that 32 Brazilian game studios, including Hermit Crab Game Studio and Rockgames, will be part of a delegation attending Devcom Digital 2020. Taking place from August 17 to 30, 2020, these incredibly talented Brazilian studios will present their latest creations, innovations, and upcoming games, as well as engage in business development, form partnerships, and come together to do what they do best — bring quality video games to the market.

In partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), the group is led by Brazil Games (the Brazilian Games Export Program) — carried out by the Brazilian Games Companies Association and Abragames.

“As one of the fastest-growing game development scenes on the planet, we're excited to show some of the amazing work from our growing stable of Indie Developers,” said Eliana Russi, Manager of Brazil Games. “Whether it’s simply getting the games into the hands of players or creating future partnerships, our studios can’t wait to hit the digital-floor at Devcom 2020.”

“Brazil has a substantial amount of incredibly talented Indie studios, and Devcom Digital is the perfect environment to get their names and faces out there in the industry,” continued Russi. “We truly believe in homegrown talent and want to show the world what we’ve all known for years — Brazil is a hotbed of extremely accomplished and gifted game creators.”
In addition, this year three Brazilian studios —out of 60 total — were selected to participate in the prestigious DevCom NRW GREEN Virtual Indie Expo 2020: Duaik, Fira Soft, and INSANE.
  • Duaik is an independent game developer located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, founded in 2014 after joining Microsoft’s ID@Xbox program and receiving the title of “Inaugural Brazilian Developer” on Xbox One in 2015 from Xbox's Phil Spencer himself. Duaik’s first title, Aritana and the Harpy's Feather, won multiple awards including Best Game at SBGames 2014, People’s Choice at BIG 2014, Brazilian Game of the Year at TGA 2014, and many more. During Decom Digital 2020, the team will exhibit its sequel, Aritana and the Twin Mask.

  • Fira Soft is a studio that focuses on working with brands to create “advergames” and educational titles that connect clients and brands with a whole new demographic and player base. Founded in 2011, Fira Soft’s upcoming title Kriophobia promises a return to survival horror and follows a geologist named Anna who finds herself trapped on the sinister Zhokhov Island.

  • INSANE was a studio founded with one goal in mind: to bring the visually distinct, truly open-world sandbox MMORPG Profane to players everywhere. With a team of 25 industry professionals, INSANE is always looking for consultants, collaborators, and new tips and technologies.
Several studios will have featured booths this year, with Duaik, INSANE, and Fira Soft exhibiting their work in the DevCom NRW GREEN Virtual Indie Expo 2020 booth, with Rockgames, Ludact, and Kokku hosting booths of their own. Brazil Games will also have a digital booth in the Country Pavillion, and registered attendees can book meetings with the Executive Team through the Devcom Meet-to-Match tool.

In addition, several studios involved in external development, who bring their skills and expertise to outside clients in order to help them reach their goals and launch their games in a polished and complete package, will join the Devcom 2020 delegation. These studios can handle just about any aspect of game development, from creating 2D and 3D art and animation to engineering, porting and everything in between:
  • Founded in 2014, Garage 227 Studios is an innovative Brazilian studio that now boasts a host of talented artists, programmers, and developers and has also recently expanded into the United States.

  • Kokku is nearing a full decade in the games industry as the studio for external development, with a hefty resume that includes work on lauded AAA titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Sniper Ghost Warrior among other VR and mobile games and is staffed by industry veterans with pedigrees from major studios such as Microsoft, CAPCOM, Tencent, SEGA and THQ.

  • Diorama Digital is the go-to studio for external development of 2D and 3D concept art, and since 2014 has worked on numerous large-scale titles like Just Cause 4, Overwatch, and Borderlands 3.

  • PUGA Studios is a top outsourcing company for 2D and stylized 3D art, with clients in 13 countries and a resume that includes work with game studios like Gearbox, Jam City, and Kwalee.

  • Manifesto Games, with almost 15 years in the industry, handles both development and operations for web and mobile titles, co-producing and developing games for Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, Disney, Sea World, and Zynga.
These companies only scratch the surface of the massive and powerful presence Brazil Games plans on bringing to the event, with many, many more studios in attendance including: Aiyra, Aoca Game Lab, Aquiris, Beta 2 Games, Black River Studios, Canvas Games, Cute Army, Diorama Digital, Electric Monkeys, Epopeia Games, GamePlan Consultants, Garage 227 Studios, Hermit Crab Game Studio, Imgnation Studios, Izyplay, Kokku, Ludact, Manifesto Games, Monster Crossing Studio, Mr. Dev Studio, Petit Fabrik, PUGA Studios, Napalm Studio, Radioativa Game Sounds, Rockgames, Skullfish Studios, Webcore Games, and Wondernaut Studio.

Meet Lauded Brazilian Studio Rock Games and Check out Their Strategic Card Game ManaRocks — Launching May 29!

Sao Paulo, May 26, 2020 - Today, we’re pleased to acquaint you with Brazil-based gaming studio Rockgames and their latest project, ManaRocks: a new kind of digital card game that offers an entirely unique “Seasonal” deckbuilding experience. After receiving funding from the revered Spcine Film, TV and Video Game Fund, the game is currently enjoying positive reviews during its Early Access period. On May 29, ManaRocks exits Steam Early access and fully launches for PC.

Rockgames is another critically-acclaimed example of the great things happening in Brazil’s thriving games industry and a prominent member of Brazil Games — an export program created by the Brazilian Game Companies Association, ABRAGAMES, in partnership with Apex-Brasil, the Brazilian Trade, and Investment Promotion Agency.

ManaRocks takes the strategic digital card game to new heights introducing a refreshing and much-needed shift in gameplay mechanics. Rather than forcing players to grind out the best cards and decks to keep up with a static meta-game, ManaRocks switches things up by creating seasons where every player begins with the same basic cards and unlocks the remaining through playing and evolving. The best part? No loot boxes, no booster packs—everybody starts on an equal playing field where skill, not time or money, will lead to victory. With 1v1 and 2v2  competitive modes, players can link up with a friend to discover and create synergies and combos that add yet another layer of strategy to the gameplay.

ManaRocks, for Windows PC, is currently Steam Early Access and will fully launch on May 29.

Rockgames is an online and mobile games development studio founded in 2013 by Alexandre Tomoyose, now Technical Director at the studio and a professor of programming at Universidade Anhembi Morumbi in Brazil, and Daniel Calife, Technical Director at Rockgames and a professor of Computer Science and Game Design. Between developing games themselves and nurturing the bright minds that will command the future of the industry, Tomoyose and Calife are at the forefront of the rapidly growing Brazilian game development scene. These two gentlemen, with backgrounds in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, bring a level of knowledge and expertise to the industry that allows them to develop and create innovative titles with deep strategic value and a satisfying, robust level of skill and progression—like ManaRocks.

Brazil Games has worked tirelessly for the past decade to support thriving Brazilian game studios internationally — funding their attendance at international video game events and connecting them with partnerships and financial backing opportunities. As the 13th largest gaming maker in the world, Brazil’s local industry has a current growth rate of 13.5% annually and accounts for $1.6 billion USD of the world’s video game-related revenue. Through their work with their affiliate studios, Brazil Games is an integral part of their success.

We’d also like to remind you and your readers about BIG Digital 2020. Taking place June 22 through 26, 2020, Brazil's Independent Game (BIG) Festival is Latin America’s largest video game industry conference and will be taking place entirely online this year. Industry professionals can now participate digitally from anywhere in the world and still experience the same  face-to-face business development opportunities, workshops, and presentations as the physical event by registering here: https://event.bigfestival.com.br/companies.
