Welcome to the Brazil Games Newsletter!

This semester has been amazing (and quite busy) for Brazilian game companies. Brazil Games associates have attended three great events around the world to share their experiences, meet people and do business.

The Brazil Games Export Program promotes the Brazilian games industry globally, developing new business leads and branding Brazil as the go-to place for business. It was created in 2013, by the Brazilian Game Companies Association, Abragames, in partnership with Apex-Brasil, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency.

Brazil Games has attended Gamescom, in Germany, from August 20th to 24th, External Development Summit, in Canada, from September 4th to 6th, and for the first time Tokyo Game Show, in Japan, from September 12th to 15th. We also had great Brazilian talents being highlighted in each of them and you will find this information below.

Apart from that, we are also getting ready for Game Connection Europe, in France, this month. It will take place from October 29th to 31st, which will close our year's events schedule. Tetragon, by Cafundo Creative Studio, is the only Brazilian game nominated for the Game Connection Development Awards Europe 2019. The game is running for The Best Mobile and Best Quality of Art awards.

Brazil game industry will also be a theme in the panel Brazil: The Next Super Territory for Games, which will present a brief overview of the Brazilian game landscape and ecosystem and why game companies should be mapping this new territory.

We are also bringing up some games which highlighted Brazilian cultural heritage in their narrative. These games are also raising gender and racial discussions and showing women and mixed-race protagonists in their gameplay. It is really worth knowing them!

Game production highlights Brazilian culture

Brazilian game production scene has been breaking paradigms: gender, racial diversity and many other statements from the industry so far. The recent production (and also worldwide consumption) is bringing up discussions about their protagonists and storytelling.

One of the examples is “Arida: Backland’s Awakening”, by the studio Aoca Game Lab. After the studio attended Gamescom, Arida downloads by German users dramatically increased.

According to Filipe Pereira, when speaking with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, founder of Aoca Games studio, Brazilians are less than half of "Arida" players. So far, they represent 47%. Americans are second, about 30%, “perhaps because of the strong gaming culture,” says Pereira. Then, it is followed by Germany, France, and Canada.

Arida tells the story of Cicera, a young woman who tries to survive in the Bahia state backlands in the late 19th century. The game combines state of the art graphics and a provocative gameplay which brings the player even more deeper inside the narrative.

"The King of Backwoods", by Ignite Game Studio

Another example, "The King of Backwoods", by Ignite Game Studio, is a VR Game inspired by Lampião, the king of gunslingers of the backwoods in Brazil. After being killed in an ambush, the most famous gunslinger of the Brazilian backwoods discovers that before his judgment, he must return to earth and hunt down demons and free renegade spirits. It will be launched in the last quarter of 2020 and will be available at Steam and Oculus Store.

“Dandara”, by Long Hat House

Other Brazilian game recently launched which brings a non-white female protagonist is “Dandara”, by Long Hat House. It is already considered a stunning game which was voted by Time magazine as one of the best in 2018, along with "Super Mario Party", "God of War" and "Red Dead Redemption 2". The game is inspired by Dandara dos Palmares, a heroin and (also) wife of Zumbi dos Palmares, one of the great Brazilian heroes who fighted against the slavery.

"Araní",  by Diorama Digital

Finally, one more example worth mentioning is "Araní", by Diorama Digital, which is still in testing phase, and stars an indigenous female warrior. The game is based on successful traditional franchises such as "Devil May Cry" and "God of War."

GAMES MADE IN BRAZIL ABOUT BRAZILIAN CULTURE

  • "Arida": Backland’s Awakening’ - Created by a historian, set in 19th century in Bahia
  • "Araní" - Still in development, its protagonist is an indigenous female warrior and the soundtrack is on Tupi language
  • "Dandara" - Standed out by Time magazine as one of the best games of 2018, it is inspired by Dandara dos Palmares, a Brazilian heroin who fighted for the liberation of the slaves
  • "The King of Backwoods", by Ignite Game Studio, is a VR Game inspired at Lampião, the king of the gunslingers of the backwoods. The game will be launched on the last quarter of 2020 for Steam and Oculus Store.

Oktagon’s new game, Trial of Titans, showcases at Taipei Game Show, TGS, in Taiwan, on the 24th and 25th of January. The title, previously called Raid Boss, started its development in 2016 and it was one of the winners of a public competition by Ancine, the Brazilian Film Agency, in 2017. Its release date is just around the corner so Oktagon took advantage of the show to playtest: “It means a lot to us to be able to playtest with real players because we can hear first hand from them what works, what can be improved and what still need attention,” explains Ronaldo Cruz, the studios’s CEO. Trial of Titans is a mobile game that shuns the standard classic fantasy environments, has got fast-paced turn-based unit-on-unit combat and highly customisable squads.
